A gift for your sister: the story only you two know

Nobody knows her like you do: the teenage promises, the arguments in the back of the car, the holiday you still haven't taken. Put it all in a novel with her as the heroine.

Start your sister's book

Sisters are hard to buy for because they know you too well. A candle says you ran out of ideas, and she will tell you so.

A Novellum book is a gift only a sister could give. Write down a few things about her: what she does now, what she was like at fourteen, the plan you made together and never kept, the phrase that still makes you both laugh. Pick up to two genres (comedy and adventure work for most sisters; romance if she is the romantic one) and we write a whole novel with her as the heroine, and you in it as well if you like.

It costs from $2.99, arrives by email on her birthday, at Christmas or on any day you choose, and you can add a narrated audiobook. Because nothing ships, it reaches a sister in Sydney as easily as one down the road.

A real page one

This is how one of our books begins. The brief: Hannah Doyle, 34, a graphic designer in Bristol and the older sister who always had a plan, is dragged by her younger sister onto the West Highland Way they promised to walk as teenagers, in the rain, with the wrong boots and one map (comedy and adventure). The hero is invented.

The first thing Hannah noticed was the slogan on her sister's bum. It was a cheerful, neon sticker stuck to the back pocket of Kate's cheap rain trousers and it read "ADVENTURE AWAITS" in letters so earnest they made Hannah feel cynical on principle. Rain hammered the bus station canopy in rude, punctual bursts. People moved like reluctant props in a wet play. Hannah tugged at a strap that had been adjusted and re-adjusted until it fit like a bad decision and tried to breathe like someone who could improvise joy.

"You should smile," Kate said, handing her a paper cup of coffee that was already half gone. Rain had made her freckles run together with a proud kind of stubbornness. She had the small, infuriating grin of someone pleased to have surprised someone else. She had the small, infuriating habit of thinking spontaneous plans were symmetrical with well-made ones.

How it works

  1. Pick up to two genres and name the hero.
  2. Tell us the story in your own words: names, places, the details only you know. Then read page one free, with no account and no card.
  3. Tick "This is a gift" and add her name and email, your message and the day it should arrive.
  4. We write the whole book, usually in about two hours, and hold it until the day. Then they get your card and their book as an EPUB and a PDF.
