A farewell gift for a colleague, written from the team's stories

The leaving card goes round, the collection goes round, and everyone wonders what to buy. Turn the stories the team tells about them into a novel where they are the hero.

Leaving presents are hard because they have to come from everybody. The safe choices (a bottle, a voucher, a plant for the new desk) are fine, but they say little about the person or the years they spent with you. The best part of any leaving do is the speech, where the stories come out.

A Novellum book keeps those stories. One person collects a few memories from the team: the coffee machine that never worked, the client who wanted it more purple, the fire drill in the rain, where they are off to next. Write them into the brief with your colleague's name, pick up to two genres (comedy and adventure suit a send-off), and we write a whole novel with them as the hero.

From $2.99, it leaves most of the collection for the cake. It arrives by email on their last day with the team's message, or on their first morning in the new job. Print the PDF and the whole office can sign the title page.

A real page one

This is how one of our books begins. The brief: Raj Mehta leaves a Manchester design agency after nine years for Auckland, and the team has hidden his leaving present somewhere in the building (comedy and adventure). The hero is invented.

Raj Mehta arrived at the office on his last day with a cardboard box of his life in Manchester balanced under one arm and a tea tumbler sealed against the city drizzle in the other. The stairwell smelled of lemon cleaner and the faint current of every Monday morning for nine years. He paused at the reception desk where a Post-it army of tiny hearts and doodled moustaches formed a neon wreath around the monitor. Someone had written GOOD LUCK in block capitals and then underlined it six times. Raj smiled because he knew which six people had conspired to make it look enthusiastic and which one had absentmindedly done the underlining while on a phone call about a logo that needed to "pop more."

A real opening Novellum wrote for an example brief, quoted unedited. Your book starts from your brief, and you read its page one free before you pay.

How it works

  1. Pick up to two genres and name the hero.
  2. Tell us the story in your own words: names, places, the details only you know. Then read page one free, with no account and no card.
  3. Tick "This is a gift" and add their name and email, your message and the day it should arrive.
  4. We write the whole book, usually in about two hours, and hold it until the day. Then they get your card and their book as an EPUB and a PDF.
